SEARCHING FOR FLAWS

The first coat of primer has gone up on the smooth texture walls, and now it's time to inspect the drywall job for flaws and imperfections. You'd think I would be so good at this, right? But it was actually a pretty tedious process, made ever more difficult as sunset approached and the house grew darker by the minute. David and I walked room by room, scanning a square foot at a time, aided by the flashlights of our iPhones in our quest for dings, scratches, and seams to mark off with blue painter's tape. By the end of the process our house looked like it had come down with a strange case of blue measles!

DID SOMEONE ORDER SOME DRYWALL?

Drywall was delivered today! They used a mini-crane to deposit stacks of drywall into the various rooms, including those on the second floor. It pretty much looked like one of those arcade games where you operate the claw with a joystick to retrieve a prize – only in reverse. Needless to say the the guy that gets to operate the machinery has a pretty sweet gig.

We also had a visit from our rep at 84 Lumber to walk through the house and – get this – walk through the house and decide which way we wanted each of the doors to open. Which side do you want the hinges on? Left? Right? Which way do you want the door to open? In? Out? All the daily details we take for granted, but when you actually have a say in every little decision it can become a bit overwhelming. The Designer in me wants to make sure our home is as user friendly as possible, but in cases like this it's nice to have a Builder-hubby to defer to.

THE HOUSE NEXT DOOR & PICKING A FLOOR

The second floor of the back house is starting to go up! David and our Framer, Pedro, had a quick chat over the plans to make sure we are all on the same page (no pun intended!). We also brought over the hardwood floor samples we selected from ProSource to see how they look on site. Fingers crossed we can agree on a favorite. Originally we had thought to do a wood look porcelain downstairs and hardwoods upstairs, but after we found some pretty durable engineered hardwoods at ProSource our thinking is shifting to using the same flooring throughout.

BUSY LITTLE SATURDAY

This morning we were greeted by an unexpected visitor – the chicken from the house two doors down. She had found her way into the house, but apparently couldn't quite figure out how to get herself back out. I snapped a few photos of our spontaneous guest and then promptly opened the sliding glass doors so she could escape back on home.

Armed with a Sharpie, tape measure, and Post-It notes, David and I quickly got to work measuring and marking the house for our low-voltage installation. This includes the under-cabinetry and under-shelf lighting for the kitchen, wine cellar, and master closets. We were soon joined by the crew in charge of caulking and sealing around all the nooks and windows. I was pretty much in awe over how well they were able to navigate the house on stilts!
